The CitySquare Cafe is Open!

At long last, the CitySquare Café is open for business! Designed as a training ground for graduates of the CitySquare WorkPaths Hospitality Program, this unique poverty-fighting project is located on the campus of the CitySquare Opportunity Center in South Dallas. It operates Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and is open to the public.

Neighbors who have completed the Hospitality Program have a chance to intern at our café, making a living wage while they secure long-term employment with our community business partners.

Mornings begin with café employee Herman Jones handing out coffee to neighbors in the Opportunity Center courtyard.
“It’s my favorite part of the day,” says Herman.

He’s not the only one who feels that way. Every morning, neighbors line up to share coffee and conversation with Herman and each other.

“There’s a dignity that comes from having a morning routine that includes something as simple as a cup of coffee and fellowship with your neighbors,” says Larry James, CitySquare CEO.

Larry says that struggling to escape poverty means struggling to escape a daily onslaught of indignities. The CitySquare Opportunity Center is designed to be a place of refuge where neighbors can seek a better life. The café advances that purpose in both the short term and the long term.

The long-term goal of the café, which is run by Chef Sonya Dorsey, is to change the trajectory of neighbors’ lives through job training and placement. To do that, it needs to generate business. Though the location isn’t central for many people living in Dallas, Chef Dorsey says that business has been good thanks to all the traffic at the Opportunity Center.

To run its programs, CitySquare requires 40 volunteers a day, most of whom are located at the Opportunity Center. Many of these volunteers, along with staff and groups that stop by for tours, eat at the Café. That keeps the kitchen busy during mealtimes.

The daily breakfast menu includes Chef Dorsey’s famous biscuits, made from a recipe passed down from her grandmother. Also on the menu are a variety of breakfast sandwiches and burritos as well as healthy items like oatmeal and parfaits. For lunch the café serves a variety of soups, salads and sandwiches, as well as a selection of desserts. They also cater to local organizations.
